Founder Insight Part 3: Matt Hammer

Writer: Darius WillisDarius Willis

In 2001, I was unwilling to abandon my dreams and devotion to sports. I needed to find something more and I pursued my passion internationally. Little did I know, this action would become the premise for my motive with ScoutSync today and a goal to represent countless athletes and coaches who often need to adjust rather than give up!

At 17, as a successful multi-sport athlete with professional aspirations, I encountered sports politics firsthand when I failed to make a national soccer team despite my abilities. This disappointment was crushing but it redirected my focus toward football, where I also had opportunities.

Years later, and after a decorated university career at Guelph - a Yates Cup Championship, All-Star selections, and Defensive MVP - I was drafted by the Saskatchewan Roughriders - a moment of great success and pride. Unfortunately, like many athletes, my CFL career was brief.  When released, I was armed only with a European citizenship and connections through a former teammate, opening the overseas opportunity - a pathway then, and often still, unknown to many North American athletes.

My European career brought fulfillment through leadership and friendships. Through Swiss Championships, an EFAF Cup, and a Eurobowl victory. Eventually, over this time, I also completed my BA, earned a postgraduate certification in Risk Management, while building a life and home in Switzerland with my wife and two children.

A couple of years later, I met Darius Willis coaching together the Swiss national team. It was his vision for ScoutSync that resonated with me. His concept - creating opportunities for athletes who lacked international exposure aligned perfectly with our experiences. We discovered parallel journeys and shared frustrations about obstacles facing athletes, coaches, and teams.

ScoutSync was born and naturally, it presents daily challenges, but passion maintains our alignment. We approach obstacles with the same dedication that defined our athletic careers, confident it will lead to success.

We've already helped numerous athletes develop and find opportunities, but our ambition extends further. It drives me to think one day someone who far exceeds our accomplishments will say, "Thank you ScoutSync, without you I wouldn't be here."

Committed to our mission, I hope to leverage my journey to strengthen ScoutSync's foundations and I know we will tackle each challenge with the intensity that once fueled us on the field. We are determined to create a movement that transforms how athletic talent flows across borders.
